According to the Energy Saving Trust, when installing a new floor in England or Wales, the floor should achieve a U-value of 0.25 W/m2K or less, if possible, and to achieve this standard, you will typically need at least 70mm of high-performance insulation foam, though this will vary depending on floor type, shape, and size.
This is for a suspended floor: solid floors are insulated differently from suspended floors. Rigid boards of foam are applied beneath the concrete floor surface, with a damp-proof membrane used to protect the concrete and prevent the floorboards rotting.
Similarly, external walls should have a damp-proof course of bricks at the base. This, combined with the vapour barrier and breather membrane, will prevent damp from rising up into the walls and warping your skirting boards.
The thickness of the material required to insulate your floor varies depending on which materials you are using for your insulation. If you are using a high-performance material like rigid foam boards or other foam materials, a 70mm thickness will be sufficient.
If you are using more affordable materials such as mineral wool or sheep’s wool, you will need at least 150mm of insulating material under your suspended wooden floor in order to protect your home enough to make it worthwhile, meet regulations, and save a meaningful amount on your energy bill.
If you are adding insulation to your flooring, the work must be done in accordance with local construction codes. Although your installer will usually take care of this for you, it is your obligation to follow all regulations.
